What if you could make and unmake yourself into different people? What if there was a place, a secret and exclusive organisation that could make it happen? Would you give up your life as you know it into the hands of complete strangers? This is The Dollhouse.
The story follows a recent college graduate named Caroline, who is captured while breaking into a research facility of mysterious medical company Rossum. Caroline unwillingly becomes a "doll" or an "active"; a programable human who can receive different personalities in order to accomplish engagements for very wealthy clients. This can be anything from being a sex partner programmed to be the perfect person in love with the client, to being imprinted with the persona of a deceased woman who wishes to solve her own murder. All dolls are given codenames. Caroline's codename is "Echo". Caroline shows signs of becoming self aware despite her programming, putting her in danger of being put in the attic, which is what the Dollhouse does with the dolls that do not work to satisfaction. She has also managed to send out a message to an FBI agent Paul Ballard who seeks to save her, and prove that the Dollhouse is a real conspiracy, and not just an urban legend.
